American R&B singer Macy Gray made a controversial statement about transgender women on Piers Morgan Uncensored on Monday, July 4. The singer also discussed racism and the US flag. But her contentious remark from the performance has since gone viral and drawn a lot of criticism.

What was said by Macy Gray to Morgan?

In the conversation, Morgan complained that famous people were afraid to say what they really thought about what a “woman” is. He then asked Gray what she thought about the matter. She responded: “A human being with b**bs, in my opinion. You must begin there. and a virgin.”

JK Rowling showed her support for Macy Gray

Morgan also brought up the recent transphobia accusations made against JK Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter series and a supporter of Gray’s viewpoint. Rowling later shared her support for Gray and her remarks on Twitter. During the show, Gray was questioned about transgender women and the host prodded her to address the purported problem around trans women in sports. The native of Ohio, 54, stated that she agreed with Morgan and added: “I’m going to say it, and everyone is going to hate me for it, but changing your bits doesn’t make you a woman in the eyes of the law. Sorry.”

The reaction of Twitter users to the remarks

In a subsequent tweet, Gray defended her remarks and expressed her admiration for the LGBTQ community. She replied, though, to restate her viewpoint on transgender people: “It takes time and effort to earn the designation “woman.” There are many females who aren’t women yet, and every girl understands that just like “man.”

Many Twitter users expressed their disapproval of Macy Gray’s remarks. Internet users who disagreed with Gray referred to her as a “TERF” (trans-exclusionary radical feminist), which is a term for a feminist who excludes the rights of transgender women from discussions about women’s rights. She did have some backers though.
