After ‘Mocking’ Transitioning In A Post, Rapper Lil Nas X Apologizes To The Trans Community
A tweet he shared on Tuesday that some perceived as mocking transitioning led Lil Nas X to apologize to the transgender community. With the caption: “The surgery was a success [HEART EMOJI]”, the rapper posted a picture of a young Black woman who looked a lot like him. A ‘facial feminization surgery’ is a procedure that many transgender women undergo to alter their typically masculine features so that they appear more feminine. In light of the recent increase in anti-transgender legislation in the US, Lil Nas X soon faced backlash for the post. In a since-deleted tweet, he shot back, ‘I’m literally just saying she looks like me, y’all can’t be serious.’ A second asked why Lil Nas X ‘had to mention surgery,’ to which he replied: ‘because she has t*ttes?’ Dude, are you dense? Afterwards, he apologized for his initial reaction to the criticism and expressed regret over the way it was handled. My apologies to the transgender community. He began the situation with anger instead of considering how it might be perceived.
I love you guys so much. My apologies, he concluded. Posts featuring his female lookalike, as well as other tweets he published before posting his apology, have been removed. During Pride Month in 2019, Lil Nas X came out as gay as part of the LGBTQIA+ community. Montero Lamar Hill wrote an emotional letter to his 14-year-old self in 2021 where he described his inner turmoil as a young closeted gay man. Despite our promises to never come out publicly, to never be these types of gay people, to die with the secret, these commitments will open doors for many queer people to simply exist, an excerpt reads. In addition, the rapper acknowledged that coming out to the world was ‘very scary’ for him because he was worried people would be ‘angry’ at him and accuse him of ‘pushing agendas’. Nevertheless, the truth is that I am. It’s time for people to stop dictating what other people should do and stop interfering with their lives. From the future, I send you love. As a result of the viral success of his song Old Town Road in 2019, Lil Nas X became a worldwide phenomenon. Billboard Hot 100 remained at the top for 19 weeks with a version featuring Billy Ray Cyrus.
