Legal Expert Weighs In: MKBHD Could Face Legal Trouble Despite Edited Speeding Footage
2 min readMarques Brownlee, better known as MKBHD, is in hot water after posting a video that included footage of him speeding at 96mph in a 35mph zone, zooming past a “careful, children” sign. Although the popular tech YouTuber quickly edited out the incriminating clip and issued a public apology, legal ramifications might still be on the horizon.
Lawyer and YouTuber Devin Stone, famously known as Legal Eagle, has provided insight into the potential legal consequences Brownlee could face. Stone confirmed that the original footage, which went viral before being removed, can still be used as evidence in a court of law.

MKBHD acknowledged his mistake on social media, stating, “All I can do is apologize and promise never to do anything close to that stupid again. That’s a terrible example to set, and I’m sorry for it.” Despite his public remorse, the incident has sparked widespread debate about accountability, especially as Brownlee continues posting content without addressing the controversy further.
According to Stone, who analyzed the situation on his YouTube channel, the laws surrounding reckless driving in New Jersey—where Brownlee resides—leave room for interpretation. Each case is evaluated individually, with authorities examining the driver’s intent and actions. Under New Jersey law, reckless driving can lead to a maximum jail sentence of 60 days for a first offense, and up to three months for repeat offenders, in addition to financial penalties.
Stone emphasized that the viral nature of the footage makes it hard for the situation to be ignored by local authorities. If pursued, the clip could serve as undeniable evidence to hold MKBHD accountable.
Stone also pointed to a similar case involving YouTuber Trevor Jacob, who was sentenced to six months in prison in 2022 for intentionally crashing a plane to gain views. Jacob’s punishment illustrates that social media stunts and public confessions can have serious consequences under the law.
For now, it remains uncertain whether New Jersey authorities will take action against MKBHD. However, as the footage continues to circulate online, the possibility of legal repercussions looms large, highlighting the risks of oversharing on social media—even after edits are made.
