Tory Lanez, a Canadian musician, was sentenced to ten years in jail on Tuesday for shooting fellow artist Megan Thee Stallion in 2020. Lanez, real name Daystar Peterson, was deemed guilty in December 2022 of three felonies linked to the gunshot, which injured a fellow artist in the foot. Prosecutors had asked for a 13-year prison sentence for the 30-year-old Canadian rapper. Lanez’s defence team had requested probation as well as a residential drug treatment programme to assist the artist in dealing with alcoholism, which they claim he developed in order to cope with childhood trauma. Lanez has been detained in the county jail since his December conviction.

Megan Thee Stallion said in court on Monday that the incident had devastated her. “I haven’t had a single day of peace since I was viciously shot by the defendant,” she said in a written statement read in court. “I’m slowly but steadily healing and regaining my strength, but I’ll never be the same.” Lanez’s attorney, Jose Baez, told reporters after court on Monday that the rapper maintained his innocence and claims his incarceration will harm the non-profit organisations and individuals he financially supports. Baez had requested that Lanez be sentenced to a yearlong inpatient treatment programme for alcohol consumption disorders.

As A Result Of Shooting Megan Thee Stallion, Canadian Musician Tory Lanez Was Sentenced To Ten Years In Prison

Tory Lanez, a Canadian musician, was sentenced to ten years in jail on Tuesday, more than seven months after he was convicted of shooting fellow musician Megan Thee Stallion during an argument in 2020. Judge David Herriford handed down the punishment to the 30-year-old rapper, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, after a delayed hearing in Los Angeles Superior Court. On December 23, a jury convicted Lanez guilty of carrying a loaded and unlicensed firearm in a vehicle, assault with a semiautomatic handgun, and negligently discharging a firearm. Lanez has been accused of shooting Grammy-winning rapper Megan Thee Stallion, 28, after a pool party in the Hollywood Hills in July 2020, hurting her foot. During the two-week trial, she testified that the shooting had been preceded by an argument that escalated when the two began insulting each other’s music careers. Megan Thee Stallion, born Megan Pete, required surgery & spent four days in the hospital before being able to walk again thanks to physical therapy. She did not attend the sentencing hearing because she could not bear being in the same room as Lanez, but she did write a statement that was read in court on Monday, according to the New York Times.

As the statement reads, “He not only shot me, but he made a joke from my trauma”. “This is a message for all survivors that they matter and that violence is unacceptable.” Jose Baez, a defence counsel for Lanez, informed reporters outside the courthouse that he believed the sentence was excessive and that Lanez was going to appeal his conviction, claiming that he had not gotten a fair trial. Lanez’s solicitors had asked for probation. “I’ve seen homicide cases and other cases where there is a death and the person is still sentenced to less than ten years,” Baez added. The case is yet another example of someone’s celebrity or status being used to punish them.” Megan Thee Stallion won Grammy awards in 2021 for best new artist, best rap performance, and best rap song. She has also been nominated for six additional awards. After the verdict in December, Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascon, whose office handled the case, stated that women, particularly Black women, are hesitant to report crimes such as assault & sexual violence since they are typically not believed.
