Judge Drops Several Claims in Lizzo Harassment Case Filed by Former Stylist Asha Daniels

In a significant development for Lizzo, a California judge has dismissed multiple claims in a lawsuit filed by Asha Daniels, a stylist who worked on the singer’s 2023 tour. The ruling, issued by Judge Fernando L. Aenlle-Rocha on December 5, 2024, determined that Lizzo cannot be held personally liable for allegations of harassment and discrimination. This decision narrows the case, which also targets the artist’s company, Big Grrrl Big Touring (BGBT).

The lawsuit, initially filed in September 2023, accused Lizzo, her tour manager Carlina Gugliotta, and wardrobe manager Amanda Nomura of fostering a hostile work environment and violating the Title VII Civil Rights Act and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Daniels alleged incidents of racial and sexual harassment, disability discrimination, and even pressure to attend inappropriate social gatherings.

Why the Claims Were Dismissed

The court ruled that U.S. labor laws do not apply to actions that allegedly took place outside the United States, such as during the European leg of Lizzo’s tour. Furthermore, Judge Aenlle-Rocha emphasized that Title VII and the ADA apply only to employers, not individuals. This interpretation aligns with legal precedents, including rulings by the Ninth Circuit Appeals Court.

In his statement, Lizzo’s attorney Marty D. Singer called the lawsuit a “publicity ploy” and expressed satisfaction with the judge’s decision. He noted, “Lizzo should never have been named as a defendant.”

However, Daniels’ attorney, Ronald L. Zambrano, asserted that the case against BGBT remains active. He highlighted plans to depose Lizzo, stating, “We look forward to questioning her under oath as the case proceeds.”

Allegations and Background

Daniels’ accusations include being subjected to racist and fatphobic remarks by Nomura, suffering an injury caused by a heavy clothing rack, and enduring mistreatment afterward. Additionally, she alleged a toxic workplace culture involving the circulation of explicit images among staff.

These claims emerged in the wake of another lawsuit filed in August 2023 by three of Lizzo’s former dancers. That suit also accused the singer of sexual harassment, discrimination, and fostering a hostile environment. Lizzo denied all allegations, describing them as “outrageous” and “sensationalized.”

The dismissal of several claims marks a win for Lizzo, but legal challenges persist. While her legal team has successfully reduced the scope of these cases, other allegations against BGBT and related parties are proceeding.

An insider close to Lizzo revealed that the singer remains committed to defending her reputation, stating, “She’s fighting these false allegations because they cannot be allowed to stand.” Lizzo, whose public persona is closely tied to themes of body positivity and empowerment, has faced heightened scrutiny as these cases unfold.

As legal proceedings continue, Lizzo has largely avoided public commentary on the matter, focusing on her professional commitments. Fans await further developments as the courts determine the validity of the remaining claims.
