JT Reflects on City Girls Split, Embraces Solo Career in New Interview
4 min readRapper JT, one-half of the renowned hip-hop duo City Girls, recently opened up about her decision to part ways with her musical partner, Yung Miami, and pursue a solo career. In an interview with Complex published on August 9, 2024, JT candidly discussed the evolution of her journey and why both she and Yung Miami believed it was the right time to explore their individual paths.
Reflecting on the decision to go solo, JT emphasized that there were no hard feelings between her and Yung Miami, whose real name is Caresha Brownlee. She explained that the decision was mutual and stemmed from a shared understanding of where they were headed creatively. JT stated, “I think it made sense for both of us. I really feel like it just made sense for us and it was no hard feelings. I’m like Tina Turner, I’m still a City Girl. I need my name. That’s the biggest thing about me, I can’t ever get away from being a City Girl. A person going to call me that no matter where I’m at.”
For JT, the choice to pursue a solo career wasn’t about abandoning her identity as part of City Girls. Instead, it was about embracing her individuality while still acknowledging her roots. She added, “It is just like ‘JT from the City Girls.’ But I feel like it just made so much sense for both of us in the direction that we were going and things that we were focusing on. It wasn’t no hard feelings about it, we saw it coming.”
City Girls, formed in 2017, quickly rose to fame with hits like Girl Code, City on Lock, and RAW. However, as time passed, the duo began to drift apart, leading to their April 2024 announcement that they would be focusing on solo careers. This news left fans divided, with many speculating about the reasons behind the split.

Addressing the pressures of living up to City Girls’ legacy, JT revealed that she’s not aiming to replicate the impact the duo had, but rather to forge her own path. “I’m just taking it one day at a time. I am not trying to beat myself because I am the City Girls. I am a part of the City Girls. That’s not my goal. I’m trying to just be me and create new moments and new memories and be myself,” she explained.
JT also made it clear that her solo work is a reflection of her personal growth and artistic evolution. “And when I do it and when I put my album out, it’s not meant to be received by people who don’t want to receive it. It’s just me being me,” she said, highlighting her desire to stay true to herself in her music.
Meanwhile, Yung Miami also spoke about the duo’s decision to part ways during an episode of her podcast, Caresha Please, aired on August 8, 2024. She emphasized that their separation wasn’t due to personal animosity, and she valued handling any issues privately rather than airing them publicly. “I’m the type of person where if we feel some type of way, we can hash this s**t out behind closed doors. You can call my phone. We can text each other. We can cuss each other out, but I feel like once it goes to the internet, you are trying to get people to pick a side,” she explained.
JT has already made significant strides in her solo career, releasing her single Okay in April 2024, which became a massive hit. The song, featuring a remix with Jeezy, was followed by her debut mixtape City Cinderella in July 2024. On the other hand, Yung Miami also continued her musical journey, releasing singles CFWM and 50/50 after the duo’s split.
As JT and Yung Miami embark on their solo endeavors, they continue to redefine their careers while maintaining respect for their shared history as City Girls.
