JoJo Siwa clears the air over her feelings about the word ‘lesbian’

JoJo Siwa took to social media on 29th July to shut down allegations over her supposedly finding the term ‘lesbian’ to be a ‘dirty word.’

The 19-year-old said in a TikTok video, ‘Ok, I’ve been going through my comments and I just want to make something super clear. I never said that lesbian was a dirty word and I never, ever would say that it’s a dirty word because it is not.’

She further clarified, ‘It is not a bad word, it is not a slur, and it is especially not a word that I am ashamed of saying or ashamed of identifying as by any means.’

Siwa then went on to say, ‘Whenever someone talks to me about my sexuality, I just say that I’m gay.’

Siwa continued, ‘It’s not the word that flows off the tongue for me if that makes sense.’

Why did JoJo Siwa receive backlash?

JoJo Siwa was slammed online after she said that she does not prefer to describe herself as a ‘lesbian.’

She said, ‘I don’t like the word itself. It’s just like a lot. But I mean, at the end of the day, that’s what I am.’

She further said in the controversial interview, ‘You can be queer and be girly. I think that’s a thing, is a lot of times ‘lesbians’ are taken to be masculine.’

Siwa added, ‘If you’re a lesbian, you’re supposed to be, do you want to be a boy? That’s not the case. There are plenty of very feminine lesbians.’

One user pointed out that Siwa should be, ‘100% be held accountable for the rhetoric she spreads.’

They continued, ‘I do hope she learns to accept herself and her identity. But that’s as far as my compassion goes. Her words were extremely harmful and she should know better.’

However, many fans rose to the young internet personality’s defense.

A fan commented, ‘Lesbian is not an ugly or bad word but it takes a lot of people time to grow into that. Being a celebrity she could’ve chosen to just say she prefers being called gay but like. She just came out and is barely 19.’
