Johnny Depp is set to return as a director next year for a biopic about an Italian artist named Amedeo Modigliani.

The Hollywood Reporter first broke the news that Johnny Depp is gearing up behind the camera for an upcoming film simply titled, Modigliani.

Depp revealed during the press conference, ‘The saga of Mr. Modigliani’s life is one that I’m incredibly honored and truly humbled, to bring to the screen.’

He added, ‘It was a life of great hardship, but eventual triumph… a universally human story all viewers can identify with.’

The motion picture is Depp’s latest effort to relaunch his career following his controversial defamation lawsuit against his former wife and actress Amber Heard.

Although several Hollywood companies had shunned Depp amid the domestic violence accusations, he continued to work with European production companies.

Moreover, the 59-year-old star will next be seen in French filmmaker Maïwenn’s Jeanne du Barry. The historical romance film will revolve around a royal concubine while Depp will portray the character of the controversial King Louis XV.

Johnny Depp to join forces with Al Pacino for Modigliani

According to recent reports, Johnny Depp will be working alongside Al Pacino and Barry Navidi for Modigliani.

Fur thermore, Pacino and Navidi will serve as co-producers for the upcoming film.

Pacino and Navidi have previously worked with each other on several projects since 2004. They have combined hands for 2004’s The Merchant Of Venice, 2011’s Wilde Salomé, and lastly 2013’s Salomé. Hence, this movie will mark another collaboration between them.

Navidi talked about his and Pacino’s involvement in Modigliani during a press release.

He said, ‘This project has been very close to Al’s heart. Al introduced me to the play, Modigliani, many years ago and I instantly fell in love with it.’

Navidi continued, ‘This is a slice of Modi’s life and not a bio. It’s been a dream of mine to work with Johnny again — he’s a true artist with an amazing vision to bring this great story to the screen.’

According to reports, the movie will be based on Dennis McIntyre’s play. It will be a retelling of the life story of Amedeo Modigliani who received glory posthumously.

Amedeo lived in Paris during the 20th century and consider himself a disappointment. His work became a success following his death in 1920.
