Sources have revealed that the Ukrainian resistance has decimated the Russian troops. As a result, Russia may lose the war. Putin planned to encircle Kyiv and pound it into submission with tanks, missile batteries and armoured personnel carriers. However, an estimated 15,000 troops and hundreds of Russian vehicles have stalled.

Russian Military ‘In A Mess’

It’s a mess for Putin’s forces after eight Russian aircraft were shot down in one day, nearly 500 soldiers killed, and a convoy of 15,000 soldiers and hundreds of vehicles stuck. Admiral Sir Tony Radakin, the Chief of the Defence Staff, said the invasion of Ukraine “is not going well” for the Kremlin.

Sir Tony told the BBC that Russia’s takeover of Ukraine was not inevitable. He further revealed that the Russian invasion of Ukraine is not going well. In his view, both the Ukrainian military and its people have put up an impressive fight. Moreover, the Russians are witnessing a united front of the world coming together and applying pressure on Russia as a result.

Invasion of Kyiv

He further reveals that Russia, being an isolated power, is suffering. Moreover, he says that Russia is less powerful as it was ten days back. In terms of maintenance, there have been failures, and Russia’s equipment is failing. This is the largest operation Russia has undertaken since the Second World War, and it is incredibly complex and challenging. In his view, the key demand of Kyiv – a no-fly zone – would not benefit those on the ground.

Despite repeated calls from Ukrainian leaders for a no-fly zone, Putin warned that imposing one would result in Ukraine joining the armed conflict. In an interview with Times Radio, former Nato Supreme Allied Commander Europe Philip Breedlove said allies should enforce a humanitarian no-fly zone. The rules of engagement will be different than a military one. They talk to the enemy and say they will not fire on them until they fire back.

Ukraine’s newspaper The Kyiv Independent reported on Sunday that President Volodymyr Zelensky reiterated his call for a halt to Russian rockets and aircraft. In BBC’s Sunday Morning programme, Sir Tony said they advised their politicians to avoid doing tactically ineffective things. In addition, they also asked the politicians to avoid taking actions that could result in miscalculations or escalation. The majority of shelling and most of the destruction are from artillery, not air attacks by Russian aircraft. If they were to police a no-fly zone, it would probably mean they had to take out Russian defence systems. Moreover, Nato aircraft would be in the air alongside Russian aircraft. This would pose a risk to the Russian aircraft as it might get shot down, leading to an escalation.
