Ice Spice Clears the Air on Matty Healy’s Controversial Remarks: Setting the Record Straight
4 min readIce Spice is keen to put Matty Healy’s insulting remarks about her ethnic background and appearance behind her once and for all. Healy, the frontman of the British pop band The 1975, received controversy after appearing on the podcast “The Adam Friedland Show” in January and appearing to encourage Friedland and his co-host Nick Mullen to make racial jokes about Ice Spice. The singer-songwriter mocked Ice Spice, calling her “dumb,” as well as could be heard giggling when the hosts alluded to the rapper as “Inuit Spice Girl” & “this chubby Chinese lady,” and imitated her with exaggerated Chinese & Hawaiian accents. “Yeah, that’s what Ice Spice is like,” Healy is believed to have said in the interview, which was subsequently taken down from streaming services.

He issued a public apology in April while performing with his band in New Zealand. The 1975’s Matty Healy is a singer-songwriter. Ice Spice, who is of Dominican as well as Nigerian origin and was reared in New York, admitted to being “so confused” by the remarks in an interview with Variety this week. She went on to say that she and Healy had just met at an event for famed fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier when Healy made a point to apologise again. Healy’s rumored ex, Taylor Swift, with whom she lately collaborated onstage & in the studio, received nothing but praise from the “In Ha Mood” rapper. The two appeared to be inseparable at the MTV Video Music Awards earlier this month, wherein they both won VMAs.

Ice Spice Officially Responds To Matty Healy’s Negative Remarks About Her
For the first time, Ice Spice tackled Matty Healy’s podcast scandal. Matty came on The Adam Friedland Show in February and made a variety of provocative comments, including one directed at the Bronx-born rapper. Ice was referred to in it as “one of the Inuit Spice Girls,” a “chubby Chinese lady,” and “a fucking Eskimo,” before a variety of dialects were mocked. Matty did eventually apologise for the incident, saying at an April 1975 gig, “I just feel a bit awful and I’m kind of a bit ashamed if I’ve offended you.” I’m sorry, Ice Spice. It’s not because I’m irritated that my joking was misinterpreted. I’m doing it because I do not want Ice Spice to feel like I’m a jerk. Ice Spice, I adore you. I sincerely apologise.” During Matty’s fling with Taylor Swift, which spanned from May to June of this year, the words were extensively reported. Taylor ended up partnering with Ice on the remix of her song “Karma,” which was released in late May, but the two have remained in touch since, most recently sitting together at this year’s VMAs. Ice was questioned about Matty’s comments by Variety as their new cover star.
She stated that she was (and still is) a fan of the 1975 since she was a youngster and added, “When I first heard that brief podcast or whatever, I was so confused.” “Because I heard ‘chubby Chinese lady’ or whatever, and I was like, ‘Huh? ‘What exactly does that mean?’ First and foremost, I’m dense. What exactly do you mean, Chinese? “What?” she asked. “Then they apologised or whatever,” she said, “but I didn’t really care the whole time.” But it’s weird because I saw him a couple of days ago at a Jean Paul Gaultier party and he was like, ‘Hey, you OK?’ and I was like, ‘Of course.’ He apologised numerous times to me. We’re OK.”When asked about sitting with Taylor at the VMAs, Ice replied, “That’s my sis.” We were discussing a variety of topics. She’s hilarious. We were drinking a little something something. Just chatting and vibes.” She went on to say that they met after she saw the 2020 documentary Miss Americana and that her management then contacted Taylor’s team, who offered her the “Karma” remix.
