Lynn Tolliver Jr., the well-known DJ on the 93.1 WZAK passed away on February 13, 2022. The radio legend, who was responsible for putting the WZAK radio station on the map, has died due to an unknown cause at the age of 71.

The star of Cleveland radio, Lynn Tolliver Jr. died at the age of 71 on Sunday. From the early 80s to the present day, he was a DJ on the popular station 93.1 WZAK. According to WKSU, an undisclosed illness caused Lynn’s death. The news of the radio legend’s death was confirmed by the same in a social media post:

Lynn’s Career – A Little Insight

Before establishing himself in the field of radio, Lynn Tolliver Jr. previously worked in factories. In addition, he established quite a few radio projects which turned out to be very successful. He even worked as a promoter. Moreover, he then worked at the United States Postal Service for five years. He worked as a program director at Detroit’s MCA before moving to Cleveland.

After spending most of his early career in Detroit, he returned to his hometown of Cleveland to launch a new rhythm and blues station in 1982, WZAK. Lynn put the WZAK radio station on the map in the 1980s by establishing herself as a popular radio personality. Despite retirement, he still broadcasted his online station, Radio 9311, after working at the station until 2000. He was a part of the same for 3 decades.

His radio stations won three Billboard Awards in 1993. Lynn Tolliver Jr. received the Excellence in Broadcasting award from the Cleveland Association of Broadcasters, making him the first Black recipient. He was not only a radio personality, but also an artist and recorded songs with his group, Sexual Harassment.

Moreover, he wrote the song I Need a Freak in 1983. Moreover, Lynn won a $1.2 million copyright infringement lawsuit against the Black Eyed Peas in 2011 after the band sampled “I Need a Freak” in the hit song “My Humps.”
