Here is everything you need to know.

Halle Bailey faces backlash for making The Little Mermaid more self-centric

Halle Bailey recently sat down with Edition to talk about her upcoming Disney film The Little Mermaid.

Moreover, during the interview, Bailey revealed that they had to change Ariel’s character and her origin story. She added that they have made her more self-centric rather than being driven due to a boy.

She said, ‘I’m really excited for my version of the film because we’ve definitely changed that perspective of just her wanting to leave the ocean for a boy.’

In addition, she stated, ‘It’s way bigger than that. It’s about herself, her purpose, her freedom, her life, and what she wants.’

Meanwhile, The Little Mermaid has already faced many criticisms in the past couple of years. The film was most recently slammed over its title track. Many netizens have alleged that the name is quite similar to Frozen’s title track.

Besides that, it also received backlash for its first teaser. Many fans claim that it did not keep with the essence of the original plotline.

Nevertheless, the film is all set to hit the theatres on 26th May 2023.

Social media users debate Halle Bailey’s viral interview

A debate has erupted on social media sites following Halle Bailey’s recent statements on the upcoming live-action film The Little Mermaid.

Additionally, fans are pointing out that Ariel wanted to explore the human world. Furthermore, she first came to the surface and enjoyed herself before she met any boy.

A user wrote, ‘Did they not see the 1989 Little Mermaid? Did they not hear her song about why she wants to go to where the humans are?’

Another commented, ‘and you wonder why people don’t want this. yes change the movie that people love, and say this one is better because that will make people like it.’

Someone else chimed in to say, ‘”‘more nuanced? She gave a summary of the original movie character.’

A different user noted, ‘That was the whole plot of Ariel… how is it more nuanced again?’
