An arrest report indicated a deputy in Bexar County observed Simmons driving erratically on Evans Road near TPC Parkway before he was stopped. A deputy signalled Simmons to stop five minutes after he was signalled to do so, according to the report. Investigators said he had difficulty maintaining focus and believed he was driving on U.S. 281. Upon being asked for his license, he also gave the deputy an American Express gold card. A field sobriety test revealed that Simmons struggled to recite the alphabet. The sheriff’s office said he was not able to provide a breath sample, but his blood alcohol level was determined through a blood test. After leaving Stone Oak bar The Green Lantern early on Friday, January 27, Simmons, 67, was pulled over on Evans Road. His speed down the road was only 20 mph. During his arrest, Simmons smelled of alcohol, struggled to maintain his balance, could not recite the alphabet correctly, and handed the officer his credit card rather than his license. Due to Simmons’ refusal to take a breathalyzer, the Bexar County deputy who pulled him over had to obtain a warrant in order to take his blood.
