Electronic Arts (EA) has officially announced that the much-loved mobile game, The Simpsons: Tapped Out, will be closing its doors for good. Launched in 2012, the game has been a staple for fans of The Simpsons series, offering them a chance to build their own version of Springfield. The news of its closure, shared via the game’s official Facebook page, has left fans saddened, with many expressing their disappointment online. However, EA has not provided a clear reason for why this decision was made.

In their official statement, EA said, “We have made the difficult decision to sunset Tapped Out.” They also announced that in-app purchases have already been disabled and that the game will be available in app stores until October 31, 2024. While this gives players some time to enjoy the game, it will completely go offline when the servers are taken down on January 24, 2025.

Despite its imminent closure, those who have already downloaded The Simpsons: Tapped Out will be able to continue playing until the server shutdown date. This means that players have a limited window to enjoy the game and complete any remaining quests before Springfield vanishes for good.

EA’s farewell message to players was filled with emotion and gratitude. “The decision to end our twelve-year journey is an emotional one,” they stated. “Together with our partners at The Simpsons™

and The Walt Disney Company, we have delighted in bringing this game to you, the fans, and seeing how you’ve each built your own beloved versions of Springfield.”

The statement also reflected on the game’s legacy, highlighting its impressive numbers. Over the years, the game has seen 308 updates, 831 characters, and a whopping 1,463 questlines. These updates allowed players to continue expanding their Springfield, introducing new characters and events from The Simpsons universe.

As expected, the news hasn’t sat well with the game’s dedicated fan base. Many players took to social media to express their sadness, sharing stories of their time spent in the game. One user wrote, “It looks like Tapped Out is shutting down. All those hours spent making my town perfect. Does anyone still play it?” Another added, “I can’t believe The Simpsons: Tapped Out is actually shutting down next year after a decade of playing it. My dad’s gonna be devastated.”

For others, the game held a deeper emotional connection. “Actually really sad about this,” a long-time player shared. “The Simpsons Tapped Out has been a guilty pleasure of mine for over 10 years! Slowly building my little Springfield. I had Richard Nixon wandering around in there. Abraham Lincoln, too. Plus, a semi-functional EPCOT Center with a monorail.”

First launched for iOS on February 29, 2012, and later for Android in 2013, The Simpsons: Tapped Out quickly became a fan-favorite. The game’s storyline centers around Homer Simpson accidentally causing a meltdown at the nuclear power plant, resulting in the destruction of Springfield. Players were tasked with helping Homer and other characters rebuild the town by completing quests and unlocking new characters and buildings along the way.

As the game prepares for its final farewell, The Simpsons: Tapped Out will be remembered fondly by fans who spent countless hours building their dream version of Springfield. While the virtual town may soon disappear, its impact on mobile gaming and The Simpsons fanbase will not be forgotten.
