Doja Cat made headlines at this year’s Global Citizen Festival in New York City with a stirring message about global injustices, using her platform to shine a light on the suffering in conflict zones like Palestine, Ukraine, Sudan, and more. The multi-talented rapper, known for hits like “Paint the Town Red,” urged fans to raise their voices and take action for those in need during her headlining performance on Saturday night (Sept. 28).

Speaking between songs during her set, Doja Cat emphasized the importance of collective action to address these humanitarian crises. “Right now, millions of men, women, and children in Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan, the Congo, and all across the world are suffering,” she said, according to Billboard. “In times like this, it is important to remember that we have the power to bring change, love, light, and hope to those who need it most.”

Doja Cat highlighted her collaboration with Global Citizen, a nonprofit organization dedicated to ending extreme poverty, stating that it was up to everyone—both fans and performers alike—to use their platforms for good. She continued, “We can’t stop now. Please keep using your voice to help those fleeing violence get the food, shelter, and education they need and very, very much deserve. There is beauty and strength in all of you who are watching this and who choose to be here tonight. This is our time to put [effort] into what matters most, and that is life.”

While her speech drew attention to critical global issues, Doja Cat also took a moment to address swirling rumors about her personal life. After being spotted with a ring on her left hand at the Las Vegas iHeartRadio Music Festival, fans speculated that she might be engaged to Stranger Things actor Joseph Quinn. However, during her Global Citizen Festival performance of “Agora Hills,” she set the record straight, saying, “I’m not married.” She later clarified online, stating that the ring was a simple David Yurman piece with “no rocks in it,” but her post was deleted shortly after.

Doja’s powerful message during the festival echoed the sentiments of other artists who have used their voices to speak out against global injustices. Earlier this year, Macklemore also made waves for his strong political stance at the “Palestine Will Live Forever” Festival, though his controversial comments later led to his removal from the Neon City Festival lineup.

Hosted by Global Citizen Ambassador Hugh Jackman, the 2023 Global Citizen Festival featured an impressive lineup, including performances from Post Malone, Jelly Roll, and Rauw Alejandro, alongside appearances from renowned figures like UN Messenger of Peace and legendary primatologist Jane Goodall, and Coldplay’s Chris Martin, who served as curator.

As part of its mission, Global Citizen encourages fans to earn tickets to the festival by taking action through its app or website, promoting efforts to defeat poverty, defend the planet, and demand equity. Doja Cat’s impassioned plea for unity and support for those suffering worldwide further solidified the festival’s message of global solidarity and action.
