Caught in 4k’s origin dates back to a video on RDCworld1 airing on YouTube in 2019. It featured a comedy sketch portraying a lawyer talking to his client. His client was a rapper and he was a part of a lot of crimes. According to the lawyer, there are pictures of the rapper committing crimes in 4k resolution. The video received over 4.2 million views on YouTube and over 1.8 million views on Twitter in a span of two years.
Although it originated in 2019, it went viral in August 2020 as well. Twitter user @zimsimmaa used a short clip from RDCworld1’s video on a social media post featuring Jeffree Star’s rumored boyfriend. It earned a total of 475,000 views, 780 retweets and 6,900 likes in five months. Since then, it has become really famous on Internet and is attracting everyone’s attention. On that very day, another user under the username of @c_ewenike used the expression. It received around 260 retweets and 3,600 likes.
In November 2020, a user with the handle @taegiwvrl used a footage of the K-pop band BTS to make a “Caught in 4k” meme. In the same month, a number of caught in 4k memes went viral. Minecraft YouTuber and streamer Jschlatt also took to the trend. It received sensational status on the Internet in December 2020.
