Brandon Blackstock, the ex-husband of Kelly Clarkson, has issued a response to Clarkson’s latest lawsuit concerning a $2.6 million ruling made by a California labor commissioner. In the lawsuit, Kelly Clarkson alleged that Blackstock should pay her more than the amount ruled by the commissioner for illegally acting as an “unlicensed talent agency” since 2007, when Clarkson entered an oral agreement with Blackstock’s family company, Starstruck Entertainment.
According to documents obtained by Page Six, Brandon Blackstock denied every allegation made by Kelly Clarkson and argued for the dismissal of the filing on the grounds th at the labor commissioner’s ruling was made in November 2023. He asserted that Clarkson failed to file a notice of appeal within the required timeframe of 10 days after the decision was made, thereby making it improper to file a separate lawsuit at this juncture.
Brandon Blackstock and his legal team contended that any alleged illegal gains obtained from acting as Clarkson’s unlicensed talent agency have already been partially or fully paid to Clarkson and Blackstock’s community estate. The documents also challenged the sufficiency of Clarkson’s complaint to constitute a cause of action against Starstruck, arguing that it is barred for failure to state facts sufficient for the claim.
Representatives for Clarkson were not immediately available for comment on Blackstock’s response.
In March, Kelly Clarkson filed the new lawsuit against Blackstock after the commissioner ruled that he and Starstruck Entertainment violated California’s Talent Agencies Act. The ruling stated that Blackstock should not have been involved in Clarkson’s deals for various projects, including the Billboard Music Awards, Wayfair, “The Voice,” and Norwegian Cruise Lines.
Kelly Clarkson argued in her lawsuit that she should be reimbursed for commissions, fees, profits, advances, producing fees, or other monies. However, Blackstock’s lawyer, Bryan Freedman, criticized Clarkson’s actions, emphasizing the financial support Blackstock provided for their children and lifestyle during their marriage.
The legal battles between Clarkson and Brandon Blackstock have been ongoing since their divorce filing in 2020. Their divorce was finalized in 2022, with Clarkson ordered to pay significant amounts in child support and spousal support to Blackstock, with whom she shares two children.
