Bobbi Althoff Reflects on Teen Suicide Attempt and Mental Health Struggles
3 min readBobbi Althoff, the 27-year-old podcaster known for her hit show The Really Good Podcast, recently shared a deeply personal story about her battle with depression and a suicide attempt during her teenage years. Speaking on Rainn Wilson’s Soul Boom podcast on December 18, Althoff opened up about her mental health journey, her tumultuous family life, and the moments that shaped her path to healing.
Growing up, Bobbi Althoff struggled with feelings of alienation and low self-esteem. She described her childhood as a time of uncertainty and self-doubt, which escalated during her freshman year of high school. At the age of 14, she found herself grappling with a sense of purposelessness and feeling out of place in the world.
Her home life further compounded these struggles. Althoff revealed that her parents, though divorced when she was in fifth grade, continued to live under the same roof for six more years. “My parents were very toxic together, but they lived in the same house until I was 14,” she shared. This strained environment took a significant toll on her emotional well-being.

At her lowest point, Althoff decided to take her own life, consuming a large quantity of Tylenol in a suicide attempt. She reflected on the fear and hesitation she felt beforehand, particularly regarding religious beliefs about the afterlife. Despite her inner turmoil, she went forward with the attempt, leaving letters for her parents and classmates.
“I laid in my bed, and I read my Bible,” she recounted. “I was like, ‘Please, God, I know I’ve just sinned, but please, I am begging you. That was not fair of you to put me in this world.’”
Her mother discovered her unconscious and, along with her father, rushed her to the hospital after futile attempts to make her vomit. During the drive, Althoff apologized repeatedly, overwhelmed by guilt. While in the hospital, a doctor’s harsh comments about her method of self-harm left her feeling even more despondent.
Following the incident, Bobbi Althoff went to live with her brother, which marked the beginning of a gradual healing process. Though she did not seek professional mental health support until recently—after her divorce from Cory Althoff—she worked on repairing her relationship with her parents over the years.
Becoming a mother proved to be a transformative experience for Althoff. She credits her children as her greatest source of strength and a reason to persevere through life’s challenges.
Bobbi Althoff has become a notable voice in the podcasting world, recognized for her ability to approach sensitive topics with honesty and wit. Her conversation with rapper NLE Choppa on The Really Good Podcast showcased this vulnerability. When Choppa, who has also struggled with mental health, asked about her teenage years, she openly replied, “Oh, I tried to kill myself when I was 14.”
Now a prominent figure in media, Althoff’s willingness to share her experiences continues to resonate with audiences. Her story is a reminder of the importance of open dialogue about mental health and the power of resilience.
