Ariana Grande has clarified the reasons behind her recent vocal changes following a viral interview clip that drew significant attention. The pop star, known for hits like “Thank You, Next,” addressed the issue after fans noticed a marked difference in her voice during a June 17 appearance on the podcast Podcrushed.

During the latter part of the episode, Grande’s speaking voice changed noticeably, prompting a wave of reactions from fans and netizens. In response to the speculation, Grande took to the comments section of a TikTok video featuring the podcast clip to explain the shift in her voice.

“habit (speaking like this for two years) and also vocal health 🙂 I intentionally change my vocal placement (high / low) often depending on how much singing I’m doing. I’ve always done this BYE,” she wrote, shedding light on her vocal habits.

Prior to Grande’s explanation, the clip had gone viral, with numerous social media users expressing their confusion and concern over her altered voice. One user commented, “Like why does she wanna sound like that. Her real voice is fine,” while another remarked, “Why does she keep doing the Glindiana voice? Her normal voice is just fine.” Another user suggested, “I feel like she doesn’t know how to separate herself from the characters she plays; she did this a long time after playing Cat Valentine.”

Some fans also drew comparisons between Grande’s vocal changes and Austin Butler’s Elvis Presley accent, which the actor maintained long after filming a biopic about the rock and roll legend. “Austin Butler Elvis voice but it’s Ariana Grande Galinda voice,” one user noted.

Grande has been diligently preparing for her role as Glinda in the upcoming film adaptation of the musical Wicked, which has contributed to the noticeable shifts in her voice. In a February 2024 interview on the Zach Sang Show, Grande discussed the extensive training she underwent to transform her voice for the role. “I trained every day…to transform my voice even, like my singing voice. Everything about me I had to kind of deconstruct to prove to them that I could handle taking on this other person,” she revealed.

In another interview with Zane Lowe in March, Grande emphasized the need to compartmentalize while working on the film. “Everything from the way I sing to the way I speak, everything kind of had to be different for a long time so that I could be fully present in it,” she explained.

Through her candid responses, Grande has provided fans with a clearer understanding of her vocal shifts, underscoring her commitment to both her vocal health and her acting career.
