Online users have been hooked on Wordle, which asks players to guess a five-letter word known as the “wordle” in six tries. Discover more about Josh’s career and how his game has received so much attention recently.

What is the Wordle Game?

Josh Wardle, a Brooklyn-based game developer, created Wordle, a daily word guessing game.
The puzzle game was created for Palak Shah, his partner who loves word games. Josh created a prototype of the game in 2013 and decided to revisit it during the pandemic.

The Times and other companies have found that word games are immensely popular in recent years, and some games have developed devoted fan bases such as the Spelling Bee. But the creator of the game “Josh Wardle” owns literally zero rewards from it.

Wordle, however, was constructed originally just for Mr. Wardle and Ms. Shah, so the initial design was short of a lot of growth-hacking features that are virtually expected from games today. It does not wish to establish an intense relationship with you like other games that send notifications to your phone, hoping you will come back throughout the day.

Over 300,000 players played the game by January 2nd, 2022, after the game was released to the public in October 2021.

Who is Josh Wardle?

Having worked as an artist, product manager, and software engineer at Reddit, Josh Wardle is just getting started.

A few years ago, he earned an MFA degree in Digital Arts from the University of Oregon. He has a BA degree in Media Arts from Royal Holloway, University of London.

His most well-known works are The Button (2015) and The Place (2017), two of his online experiments.

It consisted of a 60-second countdown that resets every time a player presses a button until the timer reaches zero in the Reddit game The Button.

Players fought over the painting on the canvas for 72 hours in The Place, a canvas game.

Despite being the first recipient of the game, Ms. Shah has played a key role in getting it ready for public release, said Mr. Wardle. About 12,000 five-letter words in English are obscure and would be hard to guess at first glance, according to one early list of five-letter words.

As Wordle’s games trend across multiple platforms, the creator is active on social media as well. He has gained over 4,700 followers on Twitter where he goes by the handle @powerlanguish.
