Warner Bros. has confirmed that The Batman, their recent superhero smash, will be followed by a sequel. Along with director Matt Reeves, Robert Pattinson, who played the titular superhero in the first film, will return for the sequel.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio announced Batman 2 during their presentation at CinemaCon on Tuesday night. “Matt took one of our most recognizable and beloved superheroes and gave him a new lease on life. “With The Batman 2, Matt Reeves, Rob Pattinson, and the entire team will transport fans back to Gotham,” Warner Bros. movie president Toby Emmerich stated during the presentation.

Pattinson portrayed Batman, the caped crusader who has been fighting crime in Gotham City for two years, discovering corruption while chasing down the Riddler (Paul Dano), a serial assassin who targets Gotham’s elite.

Selina Kyle/Catwoman was played by Zoe Kravitz, James Gordon was played by Jeffrey Wright, Carmine Falcone was played by John Turturro, Gil Colson was played by Peter Sarsgaard, Alfred Pennyworth was played by Andy Serkis, and Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin was played by Colin Farrell.

The film, which was released in theatres around the world in March of this year, has so far grossed over USD 750 million globally.

Pattinson is keen to further expand Batman’s character

“I think it’s going to be hard, because [Selina] is not yet Catwoman in the movie, but she is going to become Catwoman, and that will actually put them more and more on opposite sides,” the director said of the future dynamic between the two in a possible sequel or another film within The Batman universe.

“Yet,” he continued, “the base of what links them will always be there.” “Of course, given the two actors’ wonderful chemistry, there will be a deliciousness to that as well. That’s one of the things I like about them in the comics: you can always tell how much they care for each other, even when they’re on opposing sides.”

Pattinson, for one, told ET that he’s eager to develop the character further in future Batman episodes, noting that Reeves has a lot planned for this cinematic universe.
