Tory Lanez’s citizenship as Rapper faces deportation after he found guilty of shooting Megan Thee Stallion
4 min readAccording to the Los Angeles Times, rapper Tory Lanez was convicted on Friday of shooting singer Megan Thee Stallion in both feet following a party at Kylie Jenner’s house in July 2020. A Los Angeles jury convicted Lanez on all three counts following seven hours of deliberation. He assaulted Stallion with a semi-automatic firearm, caused great bodily injury, discharged the weapon with gross negligence, and possessed a concealed and unregistered weapon in his SUV. According to reports, Say It’s hitmaker faces up to 22 years and eight months in prison once he is sentenced next year. Since Tory Lanez is a Canadian citizen and does not hold a US passport, he will also be deported.

It has been almost two years since a petition calling for Lanez’s deportation to Canada was launched on July 27, the rapper’s birthday. Over 19,000 people signed the petition calling for Lanez’s deportation and permanent ban from America. As a result of the petition, Lanez was also accused of promoting “violence” and “violence against women”. Furthermore, he was alleged to contribute nothing to the American economy. Also tagged in the petition was the Department of Homeland Security. The verdict resulted in Tory Lanez’s immediate arrest and extradition and he was handcuffed.
Tory Lanez is now listed as an inmate in the Los Angeles County jail system.

Is Tory Lanez a US citizen?
Originally named Daystar Shemuel Shua Peterson, Tory Lanez was born on July 27, 1992, in Brampton, Ontario, Canada. His father was a Bajan, and his mother was from Curacao. After moving to Miami, Florida, the family was originally based in Montreal. The father-son duo frequently travelled throughout the United States after Lanez’s mother died and his father became an ordained minister and missionary. Following his father’s remarriage, Lanez moved with him to Atlanta, Georgia. As a result of some behavioural problems, the rapper was sent to live with his cousin in Jamaica in 2006. His grandmother in Toronto forced him to move back to Canada shortly afterwards. Since the age of 15, the rapper has been on his own after his grandmother refused to care for him. When Lanez lived in South Florida in 2009, he released a mixtape titled T.L. 2 T.O. Even though Tory Lanez spent much of his life in the U.S. due to his music career, he remains a Canadian citizen.

In addition to discharging a firearm with gross negligence, assaulting a victim with a semiautomatic firearm in a vehicle, and carrying a loaded, unregistered firearm in the car, the jury found Tory Lanez, 30, guilty. In a statement to CBS News, Megan Thee Stallion’s attorney, Alex Spiro, said the jury got it right. It is good that Meg has received justice. According to Megan Thee Stallion, whose real name is Megan Pete, Tory Lanez fired five shots at her feet during a party in the Hollywood Hills on July 12, 2020. According to Megan Thee Stallion, Tory Lanez and Megan Thee Stallion argued before the shooting, especially when they began attacking each other’s music careers.
Megan Thee Stallion deserves more than the “justice” served in Tory Lanez’s case. She deserves a culture and media landscape that doesn’t demonize Black women’s lives, safety, and voices.
