Paramount Plus, the popular American subscription video on-demand streaming service owned by Paramount Global, experienced a significant outage on Thursday, leaving many users frustrated. According to Downdetector, a website that monitors online outages, more than 4,000 users reported problems with the service.

Paramount Plus: Outage Details

The majority of the complaints, nearly 60%, were related to video streaming issues. About 34% of users encountered difficulties using the app, and 7% reported problems with the Paramount Plus website. Users took to social media and Downdetector to express their frustrations, noting a variety of issues such as sudden streaming restrictions, video buffering, and unexpected logouts.

One user, Dyler Hooton, mentioned being abruptly logged out of his account, a problem echoed by many others on Downdetector. Several users also reported that videos, which were previously available for free, suddenly had viewing restrictions.

The outage sparked a flurry of reactions from fans online:

AthairGhrian: “Still down?”

Betty Huson: “Back up on Roku in Northern California.”

McB: “Sponge Bob splash screen gets to Paramount logo and then freezes up for a while, then app announces they are having issues. Problems ongoing.”

Dexter Morgan: “Here ??”

Mo Takpec: “Paramount+ is definitely down. However, the support maze is working! There is absolutely no way to let them know it stopped!!!”

Jacklyn Lytton: “It just came back up.”

Biggamer 145: “It finally works!”

JShirley: “Was watching Seal Team and Paramount+ went down. Now it’s saying ‘not available in my region’. In Illinois close to St Louis.”

Response from Paramount Global

As of now, Paramount Global has not issued an official statement regarding the cause of the outage. However, users have reported that the service has been intermittently coming back online. This suggests that the technical team is actively working on resolving the issues.

Efforts to Improve Service

This outage comes amidst a broader push by Paramount Global to enhance the user experience on their streaming platform. Earlier this week, Skydance Media CEO David Ellison outlined plans to improve the algorithmic recommendation engines used by Paramount Plus. This initiative aims to keep users engaged longer and reduce subscription cancellations. Additionally, Ellison mentioned efforts to modernize advertising technology, providing advertisers with better data on target audiences.

While the outage was undoubtedly a major inconvenience for many Paramount Plus users, the swift response from the technical team has brought some relief as the service gradually returns to normal. As Paramount Global continues to improve its platform, users can hope for a more stable and enhanced streaming experience in the future.

For now, users experiencing issues are encouraged to check for updates and refresh their apps. With ongoing improvements and a commitment to user satisfaction, Paramount Plus aims to bounce back stronger from this disruption.
