Halsey Opens Up About Facing Hate from Her Own Fans: “Meaner Than Any Other People”.

Singer-songwriter Halsey recently shared a heartfelt message about the negativity she has faced online, specifically from those who claim to be her fans. After releasing her latest single, “Lucky,” on July 26, Halsey took to Tumblr on July 30 to express her disappointment and frustration with the backlash she received.

In her post, Halsey revealed that her own fans have been more hurtful than any other critics. She stated, “My own fans are hands down meaner to me than any other people on the planet.” While she clarified that she wasn’t speaking about all of her fans, she emphasized that a significant portion has been overwhelmingly negative. “Not speaking for all of you, of course. But it used to be just a minority that were awful to me and now it seems like a majority have only stuck around to chime in occasionally with their opini on of how much they hate me or how awful I am.”

The “Without Me” singer further elaborated on the emotional toll this negativity has taken on her. She spoke about the difficulty of engaging with people who lack “kindness, sympathy, and patience” and who don’t exhibit “honest human decency.” This toxic environment has led her to withdraw from social interactions with fans, fearing the harsh criticism she might face. “I almost lost my life. I’m not gonna do anything that doesn’t make me happy anymore. I can’t spiritually afford it,” she added.

Halsey also referenced a period of withdrawal from social media following her health struggles, during which she had hoped to return to music. However, the persistent online hate has made her question whether it was the right decision. “When I got sick all I could think about was getting better so I could come back and be a part of THIS again, but I don’t even know what this is anymore and I want to crawl in a hole and I regret coming back.”

In a subsequent message, Halsey mentioned that she was traveling for a PET scan while writing the post and hinted at a “stripped” version of “Lucky” coming soon.

Halsey’s health issues have been a significant challenge for her. She has been open about her diagnosis of lupus and a rare disorder called T-cell lymphoproliferative disorder, which she discussed on Instagram on June 4. At that time, she shared that her condition was being “managed” and that she was feeling better after two years since her initial diagnosis. She expressed her eagerness to return to the music scene, which she has begun to do with the release of “Lucky.”

“Lucky,” the lead single from her forthcoming fifth album, narrates the story of a woman who shaves her hair four times just because she wants to, only to have to do it again due to illness. The song reflects Halsey’s own struggles and her journey through illness, with lyrics about lying to people for “a whole d*mn year” about being fine, when it was actually “the biggest lie” of her career. The music video for “Lucky” was released on July 26, adding a visual layer to her poignant narrative.

As Halsey navigates her career and personal life, she continues to be open about the challenges she faces, hoping to foster a more understanding and compassionate environment among her supporters.
