Gypsy Rose Blanchard, who gained national attention for her involvement in the murder of her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard, recently faced significant backlash over a Mother’s Day tribute she posted on TikTok. The video, intended to honor her murdered mother and other maternal figures in her life, sparked controversy and led to a wave of negative comments and even death threats.

In her heartfelt video, Gypsy Rose Blanchard included mentions of her stepmother Kristy and her boyfriend Ken Urker’s mother, recognizing their support in recent years. However, the inclusion of her late mother Dee Dee in the tribute was what ignited the controversy. Despite clarifying her intentions, many social media users took offense to the mention of Dee Dee, leading to a flood of hate comments and threats against Gypsy’s safety.

“When I said that I hope my mom is proud of me, people are thinking I meant she would be proud of the murder. That is obviously not what I meant. I meant she would be proud of me in heaven, like getting my GED, moving towards independence, and learning how to cook, clean, having my own bank account, etc.,” Gypsy Rose Blanchard explained. This clarification, however, did little to quell the backlash.

Gypsy, who served eight years in prison for her involvement in her mother’s murder, turned off the comments on her post to stem the tide of negativity. Despite this, she continued to receive hostile messages in her direct messages, many of which she has since reported. Gypsy expressed frustration that her past should not prevent her from wishing the supportive women in her life a Happy Mother’s Day.

“Because of what happened with my mom, that shouldn’t make me exempt from wishing the other women in my life a Happy Mother’s Day… I did this message because I have women in my life that are supportive,” she stated.

The controversy surrounding Gypsy’s post reflects the complex legacy of her mother Dee Dee Blanchard, whose abuse and manipulation were extensively documented in the HBO documentary “Mommy Dead and Dearest” and dramatized in the Hulu miniseries “The Act.” Dee Dee’s coercive control over Gypsy included convincing her and others that Gypsy was severely ill and disabled, leading to Gypsy’s eventual involvement in her murder.

On Mother’s Day, Gypsy spent a quiet day with her stepmother Kristy, watching movies and relaxing. She cooked dinner for Kristy and gifted her a teddy bear and a glass ornament, showing appreciation for her support. Despite the controversy, Gypsy made it clear that she still thinks about her mother Dee Dee, remembering the positive aspects of their relationship and praying for her.

“I remember the good she had in her and the good times. I don’t think about the abuse or murder. I miss her and have a lot of guilt and regret,” Gypsy admitted, reflecting on the complicated emotions surrounding her mother’s memory.

Gypsy Rose Blanchard’s attempt to navigate her past while trying to honor the supportive figures in her life highlights the ongoing challenges she faces as she rebuilds her life post-incarceration. Despite the public scrutiny, she continues to seek a path forward that acknowledges both her traumatic past and her hopes for a better future.
