New York-based attorney, Domenic Romano took his stance on the sensationalized defamation libel case between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard.
The lawyer claimed that Depp’s win was a ‘Pyrrhic Victory’. But what does it mean?
Here is everything you need to know.
What is ‘Pyrrhic Victory’?
According to Cambridge Dictionary, pyrrhic victory means, ‘a victory that is not worth winning because the winner has lost so much in winning it.’
The term supposedly comes from an ancient Epirus king named Pyrrhus. He suffered hefty damages after he defeated Romans at Asculum in Apulia in 279 B.C.E.
Domenic Romano insists Johnny Depp’s win is a ‘Pyrrhic Victory’
Domenic Romano recently talked to Hana Ostapchuk of Cheddar News regarding the jury decision on largely favoring Johnny Depp over Amber Heard in the high-profile defamation trial.
Romano said, ‘Even when you win, you lose. This may be a legal victory, but it’s not really a reputational victory, and definitely not a moral victory for Johnny Depp or society at large.’
Domenic Romano is a top business and entertainment lawyer residing in New York City.
The attorney claimed that Depp should not have filed a defamation case against Heard since it brought back the dirty laundry from 2020.
In case you didn’t know, in 2029 the 58-year-old actor lost a libel case against UK outlet The Sun where they ruled him a ‘wife beater.’
Romano continued that tons of personal messages and content were revealed in the recent Virginia court proceedings that showed the actor in a bad light.
One of the most shocking texts that were allegedly messaged by the Pirates of the Caribbean actor revealed him hoping Heard’ ‘rotting corpse is decomposing in the f**king truck of a Honda civic.’
Another alleged text mentioned how he will ‘f*** [Heard] burnt corpse afterward to make sure she’s dead.’
Romano further mentioned, ‘I thought this whole thing was a terrible idea for him. I mean how do you look good?’
The lawyer however credited Depp’s legal team for putting on a more believable act and persuading the jury than Heard.
Furthermore, he dismissed some people’s concern over Depp vs Heard case will somehow affect the ‘MeToo’ movement.
Romano said, ‘In the larger scheme, I do not think this will set back the #MeToo movement. People will see it’s not a great idea to litigate a personal relationship. Victims will continue to be rightfully emboldened to come forward.’
