In the aftermath of her highly publicized trial with Johnny Depp, Amber Heard made the difficult decision to leave the United States last year. A source reveals the challenges she faced and the reasons behind her departure in an exclusive report by PEOPLE. As a result of death threats and vicious online memes, Amber Heard, known for her role in Aquaman, felt she had no choice but to flee the chaos in the United States. PEOPLE reports she decided to leave the country with her 2-year-old daughter Oonagh Paige due to too much “chaos” stateside. Amber Heard and Johnny Depp’s six-week defamation trial exposed their turbulent five-year relationship, putting their careers at risk.

Heard’s 2018 Washington Post op-ed alleging domestic abuse was deemed defamatory by the jury in Fairfax County, Va., on June 1, 2022. Depp received $1 million in damages from Heard last month, a significant reduction from the initial amount of over $10 million. According to a film source, Heard “lost the case and was treated as such.” The trial wore her down and made her feel like a “pariah.” Despite the difficulties she has faced, Amber Heard remains determined to keep pushing forward. She emphasized her love for Spain and her wish to make it her home in a TikTok video.

What Was The Reason Amber Heard Moved Out Of The United States After The Johnny Depp Trial?

According to a source in the latest issue of PEOPLE, Amber Heard moved abroad last year because she “just had to get out of the US” following her defamation conflict with ex-husband Johnny Depp, 60. According to the source, the 37-year-old Aquaman actress, who got death threats and became the target of nasty Internet memes, thought there was too much “chaos” in the United States and departed with her now-two-year-old daughter Oonagh Paige. The six-week trial, which placed shocking aspects of their turbulent five-year relationship and feared to end their careers, ended on June 1, 2022, when the Fairfax County, Va., jury mostly ruled in Depp’s favour, identifying that Heard defamed him in a 2018 Washington Post op-ed claiming she was a victim of domestic abuse. (A Depp source verified that Heard paid her ex $1 million in damages — a deal bargained down from more than $10 million — last month.) The actress, who was residing in the California desert town of Yucca Valley, withdrew from public view after condemning the ruling as a “backward step” for women’s rights.

According to a film source, Heard “lost the case and received treatment as such.” “She felt like she was a pariah.” Heard apparently rented a property on the Spanish island of Mallorca under the moniker Martha Jane Cannary, the real name of Wild West gunslinger Calamity Jane, before settling in an elite Madrid area. There is more privacy there, according to the insider. Heard sought to put the stress of the defamation case beyond her while creating a routine — running around the city and taking Oonagh to the park. Part of that was her decision last December to drop her appeal and agreed to pay Depp $1 million. The trial was extremely stressful for her, and she wanted to start over, according to a Heard source, who adds that she now “has a fresh start and is concentrating on the things she enjoys.” According to another report, she is self-sufficient and intelligent. She needs to heal.
