The Marvel film had one of the best debuts of all time. Kicking off the summer box office in high spirits. Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Starring Benedict Cumberbatch, made $185 million in its premiere. Giving it one of the largest domestic beginnings of all time. And the second-highest of the pandemic era. For a worldwide start of $450 million.

‘Dr. Strange’ big triumph for Hollywood

The performance of the sequel is a big triumph for Hollywood and theatre owners as the 2022 box office season officially begins. Studios are now set to release a slew of delayed tentpoles after more than two years of fits and start owing to COVID-19. The film’s domestic debut was the 11th largest in history, and the seventh-largest for any Marvel Cinematic title, trailing Avengers: Age of Ultron ($191.3 million), Black Panther ($202 million), The Avengers ($207.3 million), Avengers: Infinity War ($257.7 million), Spider-Man: No Way Home ($260.1 million), and Avengers: Endgame ($357.1 million), not adjusted for inflation. The last three are at the top of the overall list of largest apertures.

‘Dr. Strange’ ranks sixth among all-time global debuts

Dr. Strange 2 is now the second-highest-grossing domestic picture of 2022, trailing only The Batman, which has made $369.1 million to far. Overseas, Marvel’s newest tentpole debuted to a similarly amazing $265 million, bringing the total worldwide opening weekend to $450 million. According to Comscore, it ranks sixth among all-time global debuts for a Hollywood picture and fourth among MCU global opening weekends when comparing like-for-like markets.

The film debuted at No. 1 in all major international markets, including South Korea, where COVID-19 limitations were relaxed in recent weeks. In that nation, the film grossed $30 million, ranking it sixth all-time for a Hollywood release. Because many films, like Dr. Strange 2, are not being released in China, Asian markets such as South Korea and Japan are becoming increasingly important.
