Lizzo Apologizes for Using Derogatory Term in 'Grrrls' Song, Releases New Version
Lizzo has released an apology after fans pointed out that she used a derogatory term in her new song “Grrrls.”
The 34-year-old Grammy-winning singer took to her social media accounts on Monday to announce that a new version of the song is being released with a lyric change.
“It’s been brought to my attention that there is a harmful word in my new song ‘Grrrls.’ Let me make one thing clear: I never want to promote derogatory language,” Lizzo began her apology.
Lizzo begins her new song by singing over a sample of the song “Girls” by the Beastie Boys.
Fans have pointed out that “spaz” is an ableist slur that is offensive to the disabled community.
"As an influential artist I’m dedicated to being part of the change I’ve been waiting to see in the world. Xoxo, Lizzo.”
