In the Eastern Conference semifinals, the Boston Celtics are facing the defending champion, Milwaukee Bucks.
The Bucks won Game 1, but the Celtics recovered in Game 2 to even the series at 1-1. The Bucks put up an excellent performance in Game 3 to take a 2-1 lead in the series before the Celtics tied it up at 2-2.
Fans have noticed anything peculiar about Boston’s uniforms during the series.
Why do the Boston Celtics wear jerseys with the number 24 on them?
The Celtics wore No. 24 on their uniforms throughout the regular season and into the NBA playoffs in 2022.
On a black strip, the white number is embroidered over the left shoulder of the jersey.
The Legendary Sam Jones is honored by the Celts
It’s in commemoration of former Celtic Sam Jones, who was a key figure in the team’s illustrious history and won 10 championships with them.
Jones was a member of the Celtics from 1957 to 1969. The Celtics retired his No. 24 in 1969, and it now hangs in the rafters.
Jones became the first African-American to be inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame. He was selected to the NBA’s 50 Greatest Players of All Time list in 1996.
The year 2022 could be special for the Celtics
The Boston Celtics have a chance to repeat some of Jones’ success with the franchise in 2022.
Despite playing the Brooklyn Nets in the first round of the playoffs, Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, and Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Smart were able to witness Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving.
The Celtics boast one of the league’s hardest and grittiest defensive units, and they have one of the league’s sharpest young coaches in Ime Udoka.
It will be a difficult task to beat Giannis and the Bucks, but the Celtics are likely capable.
Game 4 goes place tonight in Milwaukee (9 May).
