Ncuti Gatwa has been announced as the next Doctor in Doctor Who

Actor Ncuti Gatwa will take over from Jodie Whittaker as the star of Doctor Who, the BBC has announced.

In a statement published on the show's website, Gatwa said he was "deeply honoured, beyond excited and of course a little bit scared."

"This role and show means so much to so many around the world, including myself, and each one of my incredibly talented...

predecessors has handled that unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care," he said.

He joins the ranks of actors such as Tom Baker, David Tennant and Matt Smith who all traveled space and time in the beloved sci-fi television series.

"Doctor Who" first aired on the BBC in 1963 and went on for about 26 years. But the program was reincarnated in 2005, with Christopher Eccleston as the leading man.
